Slowmophobia

Working as lecturer has transited me into a slower lane. It may be because of the new geographic location or it may be because of the new working environment. Being a student my whole life was truly a hectic life, especially as the education level ascended. There were deadlines to be adhered, assignments to be submitted, theses to be written, journals to be read and understood, examinations to be excelled and of course, irresistibly, movie premiers to be caught up. So many things to be done, so many things that were running through my head that the last one and half year of my life as a student went by like a foggy dream. I was constantly travelled from home to university to complete everything that was asked of me; I was living on a fast lane.

But as I graduated from the student life and as I was transferred from a fast lane to a slower lane, I am becoming more languid – relaxed. My life begins at nine and more often than not, finishes at three. My life is also lacked of deadlines, lacked of expectation and lacked of drives. Sure enough it is a life that I often wished for when I was running on a fast lane. But when I am on a slower lane, I have found out that the lassitude is – astonishingly – more tiring than the constant adrenaline. I am not used of this perpetual state of languidness.

However, as the time goes by – as I become more and more used to the relaxed life – I suddenly fear of becoming too used of this kind of life. I fear that living on slower lane will actually slow down everything in me that was used to be fast. Be it the way that I think, the way that I move, the way that I read, the way that I write, speak, act, decide, articulate, explain, and understand and so on. It was the irrational fear that I think I have sometimes. Okay, so most of time.

This fear, I think, is the drive behind my compulsive reading and writing of almost everything that I can come across. Since I fear this kind of life will slow down everything that I was, I have this irrational urge to force myself to be faster in this slower lane.

I am afraid of slowing down.

That has got to be a new phobia in medical world.

P/s: I went through the list of phobias. You know, in case my newfound fear is actually recognized and look what I have found instead.

That is kind of cruel, isn’t it? ^___^

To celebrate the coming of Mother’s Day, I’ve recently come across an unforgettable piece of poem that praises the beautiful nature of women. Every woman dreams of becoming a mother sometimes in the future and I thought to myself, why not share this poem so that all of us (both men and women) can appreciate the way Allah SWT creates women and what roles women need to play.

Truly, women make world complete in so many ways. Truly, women are special and needed to be treated as such. And for that, I think a complete equality between men and women in terms of rights, haq and Islamic rules (as what being spread by Sister in Islam as a propaganda) will actually strip off women of the privileges and the sense of special that have always surrounded women.

Allah intends men and women to be different. Men have their own privileges and so do women. I think that by appreciating the differences between the genders, we will appreciate even more us being a woman!

End of the Year Movie Reviews Special!: The Day Nabilah Stood Still (Twice)

I was so busy preparing my incoming isolation at UiTM Sri Iskandar. However, despite the hectic activities, I still managed to find some time to watch movie. End of the year is my favorite movie time. Usually, this is the period where Hollywood releases blockbuster movies. After the excitement of James Bond: Quantum of Solace, I am looking forward to watch more excellent movies. There I was, sitting in front of television, watching E! Channel when news about a movie that opened up at number one. The movie was The Day the Earth Stood Still (TDTESS).

I was rubbing my hands gleefully. Ooohh, Keanu Reeves. It had got to be good. So far, I found Keanu Reeves’ movies to be enjoyable and I was full of expectation that TDTESS to be the same. So, I went to see the movie with my cousins.

And I was stood still… Seriously. I have seen some of the most mundane and silent movies – The Shining, Beautiful Mind, Panic Room (but it was fun!), etc, etc – and TDTESS is as silent as all those movies, plus, the plot was moving in a flat line form. No sudden spike to indicate it was climax, just one flat, boring line of the overused genre. Even the conversations were boring!

Aliens, in my opinion, have no other jobs to do. They are either: 1) so evil that all they want is to destroy everything because it is fun or because the Earth so resourceful (e.g.: War of the World and Independent Day); 2) so immersed in their own problem that they don’t care if they are settling the said problem on Earth and destroying everything in the process (e.g.: Alien Vs Predator and Transformers); or 3) so noble that they couldn’t bear to see human destroying the Earth, hence, TDTESS comes in.

The overused plotline and genre can be fun if they are presented in a way that is fun. But TDTESS was so… for the lack of more expressive word… BORING. So very quiet, unmoving and stale movie. Even the actors/resses suddenly became still and rigid. Maybe (a big questionable maybe) Keanu Reeves had an excuse to be so robotic and emotionless since he was the alien. But Jennifer Connelly and Jaden Smith looked so… I don’t know… unrealistic? And the part where the aliens spoke Chinese made me laughed. Hey, there was always a first time for everything.

So, TDTESS is overrated. Big time. A good movie to watch if you don’t have anything else better to do at the moment but I’d rather wait for the HBO to air it.

Rating? I’d give 5.2/10. If not for the plot or the actors/resses, I’d rate it for the beautiful graphic and visual effects.

Morale of the movie: It is undisputedly proven. America is an aggressive country which shoots first and regrets ~~never~~ later. It is agreed by an American movie.

After the disappointment of TDTESS, I was suddenly bombed by my younger cousin (a girl) about a movie called Twilight. She gushed and gushed and persuaded me to watch the movie. At that time, I had no idea what in the world was Twilight. When she described the story was about vampire, I was like, “No way! I have enough of vampire stories that full of suggestive bites!” Whenever those kinds of scene came up, I was left with a shiver and automatically my hand flew to my neck.

And she argued that Twilight was different. The movie contained only one (okay, maybe two) bites but even those were not long. (Does anybody watch Interview with a Vampire? *Shudder…*) But that was not the point, as she waved her hands about, the point was about how cute the guy was (figures…) and how romantic was the love between a mortal, which was a girl, and a vampire, which was the cute guy (double figures…).

In my mind, I began to visualize the cheesy love scenes under the moonlight with dark, huge castle in the background as the mortal and the immortal vampire declare their undying love… (huh, that sounds frighteningly familiar… oh, right… the covenant).

No… no way!

As she dragged me, regardless, towards the counter ticket to buy Twilight ticket, I was saved by Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa (that movie was AWESOME, by the way) and we ended up watching Alex and his gangs.

Then, I got home, turned on my computer to go to Yahoo! News. Bomb!!! Articles of Twilight movie and book filled the headlines. Even when I switched to E! Channel, Twilight was the *thing* of the moment. Huh?!!! What is the big freaking deal about this movie?

My curiosity was quickly aroused. And that was when I knew that I was doomed forever. I knew that no matter how I felt about those cheesy movies, I would end up watching Twilight regardless.

I was stood still. This time, literally.

I was right. Both about ending up watching the movie and that the movie was cheesy. Huhu… I mean what do you expect from a movie that was full of damsel that was in distress (all the time) and a hero that was so very powerful that he was willing to risk his life to protect her for the rest of her life. It was every girl’s (and woman’s) dream. And it was a cliché that never lost its novelty.

For example…

Edward: I feel strongly protective over you.

Edward: Can’t you just be content by living a long and happy life with me?

Edward: I have not the strength to stay away from you anymore.

Bella: Then don’t.

The quotations might not be accurate but... Huhu… See what I mean?

For me, Bella was a dull character. No special characteristic that can be attributed to her. She was moody, silent, angsty… yada, yada… a typical teenager. Edward was indecisive. He was all I-hate-her-suddenly-I-love-her. It was weird watching them interacted. I just didn’t feel them.

It was like watching the Covenant all over again…

Even the plot was overused. Let me summarize it. A damsel met a devastatingly handsome and mysterious man, who had a secret that he had awesomely strong power and that the fact he was immortal. Then they hated each other and they fell in love (irrecoverably, absolutely, undeniably… you get the gist). And then, suddenly, a villain came. He was strong and immortal too and he wanted to hurt the damsel (for many reasons but in this plot, because he wanted to eat her). The hero got all protective and heroic and thus, the epic scene of damsel-got-caught-and-was-hurt-by-the-villain-but-was-saved-by-the-hero-in-the-nick-of-time-and-the-hero-fought-with-villain-in-revenge-mode.

And everybody lived happily ever after, except, of course the villain, who was dead.

Oh! The clichés. I repetitively turned my face away in utter dismay. (hehe).

Rating? Slightly higher than the monotone TDTESS. I’d give 5.8/10. I’d give a flat 6/10 but Edward’s bright red, lipstick-covered lips and distinguishable hairdo distracted me all through out the movie.

Movie Review: Quantum of Solace (Since someone asks for it)

I started my Saturday morning with no intention whatsoever of going out. I woke up, ate my breakfast, played around with my nearly two years old niece and watched TV for a while (is it me or has Astro’s programmes are getting suckier each time I switch on the TV?). Then, I sat in front of my computer to surf internet.

Emails first. Hmm… Spam, spam, spa-oh newsletter from ACCA, spam and more spam. Oh, for crying out loud, I began to think that I had no friends at all! Then, I went to the usual blogs I haunted. A few updates and more than a few laughs later, I twirled my fingers indecisively. Oh, when was the last time I went for a movie? So, quickly I typed –www.gsc.com.my- and clicked on the showtime menu.

1.30 – James Bond: Quantum of Solace.
2.30 – Madagascar 2: Escape to Afri… What a minute!!! Go back! Go back! James Bond?!

Oh crap! I forgot! I totally forgot about James Bond’s Quantum of Solace. What was date? What was the freaking date? 8th of November?!! Where did all the time go? I missed the premier?

So, I got up – before sitting back again to shut down the computer – and went to my brother, issuing an ultimatum to accompany me to watch James Bond. Seeing the mad glaze in my eyes (I’m gonna watch Daniel Craig!!! Kyaa!!!), any refusal was immediately swallowed back and he could only meekly nod his head and off we went!

The opening of the movie was explosive. The fast-paced car chase (poor Aston Martin cars – no wonder England’s economy is suffering. Thanks to James Bond and his tendency of breaking awfully expensive and pretty cars) and the hand-to-hand combats that followed after were exciting. Daniel Craig hadn’t lost the intensity in his eyes whenever he shot somebody. Even more so, now that vengeance was driving his adrenaline. The fighting cinematography was excellent, as I expected it to be. They were really taking the advantage of Daniel Craig’s considerable youth (he’s just turned 40, thank you very much) and incorporated as much as physical stunts as possible. His acting? I think he was born to play James Bond.

I quite adored the Bond girl, which was played by Olga Kurylenko. Maybe not as much as previous Bond girl (played by the lovely Eva Green) but this Bond girl had more attitudes than the Vesper Lynd and she was not afraid to look messy. Bringing in the character of Camille Montes, Olga Kurylenko managed to restore the good name of every woman in James Bond movies by waving the message that, ‘I am strong, independent and determine with a heartbreaking past. But I am also feminine enough to show vulnerability. And by the way, I am a woman.’ Powerful character.

The difference between the Bond before he fell in love and the Bond after the lost the love? The intensity was up several notches, the humor was grim, sarcastic and bordered to cruelty and it was quite heart-breaking to see him wanting to revenge for the woman that he believed had betrayed him. This Bond was also had even less things to say as compared to the first movie and he preferred to let his fists, kicks and bullets did the talking.

My personal favorite scene of the story was when Bond threw a can of oil to Dominic Greene (played by Mathieu Amalric) when he left the bad guy in the middle of the desert. You can never find a character like James Bond anywhere else.

I really, really can’t help myself. Movie quotes!

James Bond: No it doesn't. Come on.

(Hehe. Self-indulgence and vain Bond. And you ask me why he is so irresistible.)

James Bond: No, not yet.

Barrier

Breaking through a barrier that you don't know you've built around yourself is hard. Because life is full of uncertainties and risks that demand prices you cannot afford to pay, you built barrier to protect yourself from these uncertainties. You keep people around you at arm's length; close enough to make you happy but far away enough to keep your heart safe.

Within the barrier is your haven, your safe place. One where you can keep on hiding you heart from people around you because you are fully aware how vicious people can be. And you are too of a coward to take the burn.

Some days, you feel too isolated that you hated the barrier that you built - because breaking free from the psychological prison takes more than the courage you have within you. But most days, you are content with your life, convincing yourself that you don't need those uncertainties in your life.

Too many risks to take, too many consequences to weigh and you settle for the least. Even if you know life is a gamble, you don't think the reward is high enough for you put in your own stake.

Life on a one-way train

No matter what kind of trains that we are on board: fast train, slow train, economic-class train, first-class train or even commuter that spends more time stopping than moving, we are on a one-way train. There's no turning back. No matter whatever that we have passed by, there is no stopping the train.

The train will keep on moving. It cares not for the fact we are regretting for the places we missed. Neither does it care if we pass up any opportunity. It does not stop - not no matter what.

It kind of depressing, in a way. Catching up, running and chasing. Choosing and selecting. Deliberating and weighing. Rejoicing and regretting. For all those possibility of making mistakes, we know that we cannot stop the train and reverse it.

However, all those things that we experience during our time in the one-way train, it is the getting off that will matter the most.

Words to Ponder

I've read something interesting yesterday. It's a phrase at a wall. It says, '...you have to let go of things that you cannot change...'

Is it true? Isn't that what you call 'giving up'? And how do you perceive things that cannot be changed? Or how long do you need to try before that thing is deemed to be unchangeable?

In some ways, those words have their own merit. If we cannot let go, we'll be obsessed over those things that we cannot let go. We cannot move on; we kept on hanging on to those things at the expense of other things in our life.

But where is the line between obsession and giving up?

I don't know. But like all other things life requires from us, I don't think the border is easily to be seen. Sometimes, we have to just keep up with the flow of life.

The Post-Graduate Game

That just sums up my whole life...

My life moves in endless circle. Sometimes, I wonder when will it stop becoming a circle and just start to - MOVE ON. My dissertation has gotten minor correction and I am graced with two-week period to do the correction. I'm so... despondent. *Sigh* I hope you guys are in better position than I am.

Anyway, congratulation to Kemal for the new born baby and to Enon for finally settling down. Sorry for not being able to be there. Everybody has their own reasons and priorities that need to be sorted out.
